Food and drink

Eskdale and Wasdale are blessed with a host of great pubs to fortify you, whether you’ve spent the day on the fells or just want enjoy some Lakeland hospitality.

Less than five minutes’ walk down the hill from Fell Foot, The Bridge Inn has cosy bar, friendly staff, Wainwright and Jennings bitters on tap and an enticing menu of pub classics and specials. It’s also home to a unique competition – The World’s Biggest Liar.

Now, we’re biased because we had our wedding reception there, but much as we love The Bridge, our favourite pub is just over the hill in the other direction, past Irton Pike – The Bower House Inn.

The bar is full of character (and characters) and dog-friendly, with a roaring fire to warm walkers’ bones. There’s a huge beer garden and play area to enjoy as well, and you might even catch Eskdale Cricket Club in their whites on the adjacent pitch, all overlooked by the imposing Muncaster Fell.

Just a short stroll from Fell Foot you’ll find Woodlands Bistro and Team Room, serving a terrific lunch and brunch menu alongside a range of local gifts and artwork.

A short drive to Gosforth brings you to a well-appointed general store for provisions – Simply Fresh – and if you fancy wood-fired pizza, Wild Olive Italian restaurant.
