Ravenglass-Eskdale steam railway

Meet ‘The Ratty’ – one of the oldest and longest narrow gauge railways in England.  Meaning “little railway”  in old Cumbrian dialect, ‘La’al Ratty’ has been running between Ravenglass on the coast to Dalegarth in upper Eskdale for more than 100 years.

Perfect for kids and steam enthusiasts, the journey takes 40 minutes each way and you can ride in covered, semi-covered or open-top carriages depending on the weather or your preference!

The main season runs from March to October but trains do still operate in November and December.  You can buy tickets in advance from the official website or just turn up and pay before travelling. You’ll find Ravenglass station at the centre of the village and Dalegarth station on the road towards Boot (the turning is opposite the King George IV pub).

Wherever you are in Eskdale, you’ll hear the distinctive ‘toot’ of the Ratty as it puffs along the line, and Alfred Wainwright published a brilliant guide to walks from the line’s various stations. There’s so much to explore…
