Where to walk

Think you know the Lake District? You might be surprised.

Within 15 minutes’ drive of Fell Foot you can be at Wasdale Head, base for an ascent of Scafell, but head in the other direction and in the same time you’ll be at the beach at Drigg (pictured below) or Seascale, enjoying wide open spaces, sand dunes, playgrounds and ice cream – perfect for kids, dogs and adults.

Fell Foot is so called because it sits at the base of Irton Pike, the south-westerly end of the Wastwater fells, where Wasdale and Eskdale meet and the River Irt winds its way to the coast and the historic Roman port of Ravenglass.

There are countless opportunities in the area for walkers of all ages and abilities to enjoy the stunning Lakeland countryside.

Hard Knott Roman Fort

Fire your imagination and enjoy panoramic views (and test your gears!) with a trip to Hard Knott Roman fort (above), a hilltop outpost of Emperor Hadrian’s army in the 2nd century BC,

Or explore the upper reaches of the River Esk, where deep pools – including the celebrated Tongue Pot – offer swimming in dramatic surroundings.

You may also base your walks around La’al Ratty, the narrow-gauge railway that runs from Dalegarth in Eskdale to the coast at the Roman port of Ravenglass. Check out this guide to numerous walks based on the railway line’s stations from famous Lakeland chronicler Alfred Wainwright.

You’ll find surprises around every dry stone wall…
