Meet ‘The Ratty’ – one of the oldest and longest narrow gauge railways in England. Meaning “little railway” in old Cumbrian dialect, ‘La’al Ratty’ has been running between Ravenglass on the coast to Dalegarth in upper Eskdale for more than 100 years.

Within 15 minutes’ drive of Fell Foot you can be at Wasdale Head, base for an ascent of Scafell, but head in the other direction and in the same time you’ll be at the beach at Drigg (pictured below) or Seascale, enjoying wide open spaces, sand dunes, playgrounds and ice cream – perfect for kids, dogs and adults.
Eskdale and Wasdale are blessed with a host of great pubs to fortify you, whether you’ve spent the day on the fells or just want enjoy some Lakeland hospitality.
